The Basics Of Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition where the sciatic nerve becomes inflamed, causing pain down one side of the spine. There are many possible causes of sciatica, including a herniated disc (where the spinal cord bulges out of its normal space), compression of the nerve by a bone tumor, or a stroke. Sciatica can be very frustrating and debilitating, and it can often require long-term treatment to resolve.

Here are some sciatica physiotherapy tricks that can help relieve pain:

1) Massage: An massage can help to relax tense muscles and reduce the amount of pain you experience. Make sure to use gentle pressure and strokes that focus on the areas surrounding the nerve root.

2) Heat: Applying heat to your sciatica area can also be very helpful in relieving pain. Use a heating pad, hot water bottle, or electric blanket to get the desired level of warmth. Be sure to avoid applying too much heat, as this could further irritate your already inflamed nerve.

3) Ice: Applied ice can also be quite effective in relieving sciatica pain. Place an ice pack on your lower back or leg, and hold it there for about 10 minutes before gradually removing it. Repeat as needed.

4) Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a type of Chinese medicine that has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of conditions, including sciatica. A qualified acupuncturist will use tiny needles to target specific points on your body in order to alleviate your pain.

5) Exercises: Exercise is often recommended as one of the best ways to reduce stress and tension in the body, which can lead to chronic health issues like sciatica. Try seated stretches like cat-cow and pigeon pose, toe touches (with eyes closed), side bends with the elbow supported on armrest, and Child’s pose (with heels touching). Make sure to warm up before starting any exercise routine for sciatica relief.
