Gum disease is the swelling and infection of the gums which support the teeth with two types available. Gingivitis is the least dangerous of the two and can be easily treated, if ignored it can become periodontitis, which is a severe form of gum disease and if ignored can result in tooth loss.
The main cause of gum disease is plaque build-up. Plague is made up of bacteria and while most of the bacteria are harmless, there are some that can cause serious problems, resulting in gum disease. Hence to avoid this one should look for treatment of gum disease

The only preventative method is to ensure good oral hygiene with regular brushing, flossing, and mouth wash to use at least twice a day with brushing for two minutes per session.
When it comes to periodontitis, patients need to be exceptionally careful and follow treatment recommendations to the letter.
Unlike gingivitis, which is simply the swelling and pain of the gums, periodontitis actually forms little pockets between the gum and tooth.
These pockets fill with dangerous bacteria that attack the tooth structure, as a result without treatment this particular type of gum disease can result in tooth loss.
Dr. Tariq Drabu dentist and specialist oral surgeon advised that smoking is one of the risks of contracting gum disease. Smoking reduces blood flow and can result in gingivitis or periodontitis. He recommends that patients look out for red or swollen gums, painful gums, and bleeding while brushing which are all signs of this disease.
