Radionica Covering Conflict

Autor: Goran Katić

Published on 29.01.2009. 13:25

Radionica ratne fotografije održati će se u Hrvatskoj i Bosni i Hercegovini. Poziv za radionicu u cijelosti prenosimo  na engleskom jeziku.

Workshop: Covering Conflict - The object of this workshop is to better prepare the photographer for their assignment in a conflict zone.

This 6 day workshop is intended for those early professional and student photographers who have an interest in covering conflicts, who have a thousand un-answered questions and no one to ask. Filip Horvat (NYTs) and Wade Goddard (WPL) have not only experience with conflicts but also the media industry and it's various publications.

Wade Goddard, 1969. Covered the breakup of the former Yugoslavia from 1992 - 2001 as a freelancer for Reuters, New York Times and Newsweek. Since 2002 wade has curated and directed War Photo Limited, an exhibition center for war and conflict photography in Dubrovnik Croatia.

Filip Horvat, 1962. A magazine photojournalist since 1986 and a founding member of Saba Press Photos - Covered the collapse of Eastern Europe, the break up of Yugoslavia, the invasion of Afghanistan. Filip has been working with the New York Times for the last 5 years throughout south eastern Europe.

Outline

The workshop will start in Dubrovnik on the morning of the 28th, with photojournalist Jason Howe and his exhibit Columbia. Eric Bouvet will be joining us from the 29th for lectures, portfolio reviews and much more. On Thursday we will all travel to Mostar for a one day assignment exercise and arrive in the late evening on the Island of Prvic. Friday and Saturday, we will photograph a simulated conflict and do a full first aid course. Sunday will be full of editing and presenting your work from the week.

While this workshop is geared towards the photographer, there is no reason why a radio, print or video journalist would not equally benefit.
The workshop will be held from the morning of Tuesday 28th April, and finishing on Sunday 3rd May 2009

The Guest Lecturers

Eric Bouvet from Network VII will be with us for 5 days

Jason Howe will be with us all week

Program

Monday 27th April 2009

Arrive in Dubrovnik , get yourself settled in your accommodation, meet up at War Photo Limited in the late afternoon till evening, meet the rest of the group, Wade Goddard, Filip Horvat, and Jason Howe. We will all have dinner together and get to know each other.

Tuesday 28th

Jason Howe will introduce his exhibit (which will be on display at War Photo Limited) he will talk about his experiences not only of Columbia but also in Afghanistan and Iraq, about being a photojournalist and the do’s and don’t’s when working in these regions. He will also talk about his process of publishing a book.

Wednesday 29th April

Eric Bouvet will be lecturing, topics include editing, portfolios, getting into the business of photojournalism, compiling a photo story, approaching an editor. Portfolio reviews.

Thursday 30th April

An early start, we head to the city of Mostar in Bosnia and Hercegovina. Once divided along ethnic lines this small city was ravished by intense fighting between Bosnian Croats and Bosnian Muslims, the frontline still very visible today runs though the center of the town. You will be set a one day magazine assignment exercise to cover the “reunification or lack of” between the two sides. Once the light has gone (6-7pm) we will head to the Island of Prvic.

Friday 1st May

We will be photographing a simulated conflict of two opposing armed groups. Approximately 20 men, many former soldiers and defenders of the region, dressed in uniform, armed with Air Soft weapons, these weapons look like really firearms, M16s and AK 47s but fire small plastic pallets. Though they cannot cause you any harm, though they do hurt a little if hit at close range. This will give you a sense danger, but the main exercise is to learn to shoot soldiers in action, moving quickly, changing light conditions, to get a sense of how you would perform in a fast moving event where you have to keep up, communicate, “stay safe” and shoot interesting images. In the evening we will have a big BBQ with the guys from the conflict simulation.

Saturday 2nd May

In the morning we will review and help you put together both photo stories from the previous days, Eric, Jason, Filip and Wade will be on hand to help you with your editing, color management and captioning. In the Afternoon we will have a full First Aid Course with particular reference to war related injuries. Discuss safety in conflict zones.

Sunday 3rd May

A day of final reviews and edits, color corrections, preparing your story for presentation to the group, as you would present it to an editor. We will close the week with a farewell BBQ
