Fine Art Digital Printmaking with R. Mac Holbert
Co-founder Nash Editions www.nasheditions.com
Sunday - 9 am-5 pm January 7, 2007Join digital pioneer R. Mac Holbert in a day of fine art printmaking. This workshop combines a comprehensive tutorial of digital workflow with printmaking demonstrations. The morning session focuses on techniques for image capture, processing, and output. Mac shares his expertise with color management, tonal adjustments, image editing, sharpening, and paper choices used to create museum quality prints on technology accessible to professionals and dedicated amateurs alike. The afternoon session focuses on the review of participants' digital files and prints. Several files are randomly chosen and Mac walks through the entire process, explaining the techniques he applies while preparing the images and making Epson prints. Participants have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues along the way.
The morning tutorial combined with the afternoon printing session allows participants to cement their knowledge of key techniques in making a great print. Students should bring their art as well as their questions and take advantage of R. Mac Holbert's 16 years of digital printmaking experience.

A photographic journey with Julia Dean
Wednesday, January 17 - Sunday, January 28, 2007Our first trip to Vietnam took place in January 2006 and it was such an extraordinary success that we're doing it again. This time it will be even better, now that we know our way around and what we loved most. We'll begin in Hanoi, a fascinating city, to say the very least. One of the most memorable moments of the entire trip was in Hanoi at dusk, riding bicycle taxis through the over crowded city streets. We'll be staying for two nights in Hanoi before boarding an overnight train to the northern region of Vietnam, right at the Chinese border. We'll stay in Sapa, a mountain village even more beautiful than the guidebooks say. We'll stay for three nights while discovering the area. After another overnight train ride back to Hanoi, we will fly into Hue, a place described by the Lonely Planet guidebook as "the heartbeat of Vietnam, a centre of political intrigue, cultural innovation, religious worship and educational excellence." We'll stay for one night before taking the bus south to Hoi An, to the luxurious, five-star Golden Sand Resort, a ritzy place right on the beach. Hoi An is known for its exquisite silks, and you can have custom fitted clothes made during our two-day stay. There is a lot to photograph too, of course, in this ancient World Heritage Site. From Hoi An, we'll fly into Ho Chi Minh City, where we'll stay one night before the trip ends. We have aligned with the same travel agency that we used for our first trip, where we were very well taken care of. We will be again.
While on the road, we will discuss many photographic topics. There will be optional technical lectures for those who need it. Plus Julia will spend private time with anyone, whether to impart technical information or to join the student while shooting. In our other travel workshops where the group stays in one place for a week, we spend a lot of time critiquing negatives, digital images, and prints. But because we are on the move so much with this trip, it is more difficult for film shooters to get processed and edited, though we are always able to edit digital shooters' work. Whatever work isn't seen on the road will be reviewed upon our return to the United States. Those living in the Los Angeles area will get together in L.A. for a final edit before the exhibition. We will exhibit the work at the Julia Dean Gallery.
